I used to be a big, "find the cheapest gas guy". I would go to your local convenience store (Wawa or 7-11) or use my points and get grocery store gas. My brother told me that every 4th fill up I should use "name" brand gas (Shell or Exxon) to prevent gunk build up in the engine and fuel system. So, I started going to Exxon every 4th fill up and I noticed my gas mileage went up. I would get 18 mpg with cheap gas, just driving and not focused on driving to conserve fuel. After going to Exxon every 4th fill up, my gas mileage went up to 19. So, I started going every fill up and I am now up to 20 mpg.

I am just curious if anyone has experimented with this or if anyone wants to do this experiment. Does name brand gas get you better gas mileage than off brand gas? I have a Sport with 18" Overland Wheels, Automatic, Drive back roads and highway on a daily basis. I am not in stop and go traffic other than stop lights. I will cruise between 65 and 75 mpg. I am trying to give as much info as possible since a lot of things go into gas mileage.

I used to log all my fill ups in a spreadsheet with date, price, fuel retailer, and any special notes (this tank I was towing a lot, or this tank I had more city driving, etc.). I did this for years.

What I noticed is that there WAS a difference in MPG between retailers. In my area, Kroger gasoline provided the best results. Some of the worst results came from Top Tier fuel retailers.

Now, most insiders will remind you that ALL gasoline comes from just a couple of refineries. But, the difference is that each retailer uses their own additive package. So it makes sense that there would be a small difference in efficiency between them.

With diesel fuel it doesn't seem to matter. I get the same MPG hand calculated no matter what.

If you are worried about it, you could always get a tank treatment at your local auto parts and throw it in to get the same effect as the additive package in a Top Tier fuel.

Check your inbox.
You have to take into consideration the additives and ethanol blends.

Over a long enough timeline, MPGs are pretty consistent regardless of the fuel provider.

I call BS. Not calling you a liar. My buddy and I commuted for 10 years together. I drove a 95 Honda Civic and he had a 4.3L S/15 pickup. We made a bet. He used Chevron almost exclusively. I used whatever was cheapest. Bet was he provided gas for a week of Chevron in my car and I did the same for his week to drive with my cheap gas. I win he pays my gas for a month he wins I pay. End result was his Chevron was no better than my cheap gas. He got no less gas mileage from the cheap gas. Also had a buddy who drove tanker for gas. He told me that they usually just dump any excess in any other tank. So we found out it didn't matter one bit.

Here where I live in Socal, most (if not all) of the local gas stations (Chevron, Shell, Arco, Valero, Costco, Seven Eleven, etc.) get their gas trucked in from the same local "tank farm" (a distribution center). The only thing I can think each gas station/brand does is add their own additives (like detergents). I've never experienced any difference in performance, mileage, or need to flush my fuel system for any car I've owned. One thing that I have heard is that some gas stations may not be as attentive about water/moisture in their tanks, which wouldn't be the fault of the distribution source but maintenance of the station itself. I'm not certain if there are any municipal oversight for fuel quality (like weights & measures for fuel pump accuracy).

I'm curious what you you find with different gas stations. Keep us posted.

I noticed the truck runs like crap on crap gas. I just stick to Chevron 91 and it's happy.

I'm not worried about it. I was just surprised at the change in mpg.

I get it, but no BS. I just went off of what the computer said the mpg was. And I always reset at every fill up.

Here in Western PA I know that the same pipeline flows into 3 main holding facilities. No matter what the name is on the side of the truck, they haul gas out of those locations.

Is it possible that they add something on site at the gas station? I wouldn't think so but I could be wrong.

I get gas where I can... I am pretty steady at 19.5 - 20 mpg depending on where I'm driving.

I only use name brand gas now. I've had a few bad experiences with bad/cheap gas and its just not worth it. Shell, BP, Exxon usually. The prices are typically about the same, so it doesn't hurt me to take the extra minute to go to the better station or pay a couple bucks more.
