From what I’ve found looking at various Chrysler/FCA/Stellantis diesel vehicles, the Bosch CP4.2 HPFP has been used on all common rail Diesel engines in these vehicles. The Gen 2 (2014-2019) and Gen 3 (2020 - present) EcoDiesel engines use the same pump with minor revisions to the pump and plunger seals. These updates seem to be around the 2019 - 2020 timeframe.

The failure rate is something less than 3% +/- across all engines and years but I’ve not seen anything broken down to specific years but I’d love to see it if anyone has this info. With that said there’s a 97% +/- success rate on these engines to 100,000 miles. Not much data is available outside the power train warranty time period unless it’s novel. There are novel numbers for 300k + mileage units but not much else.

When I was working on medium and heavy duty (Navistar/IH, Peterbilt, Cat and Detroit) Diesel engines, the most common failures were caused by user error. The issues ranged from incorrect fuel to air in the lines and a whole host of improper maintenance. I only saw a few true pumps truly eat themselves with proper maintenance.

If an issue occurred, one of the first requirements was to produce maintenance and fuel records. Those that serviced their own units had poor to no records and fleet services had better records and I stumbled onto a pattern. Many but not all failures coincided with fuel filter changes and improper priming of the fuel systems. If the service was performed by the owner, they were SOL but those performed by the fleet services were paid by insurance as they had records.

Your mileage may vary, but I’d start keeping fuel and maintenance records.

Why is it I have a feeling we were all hoping the remedy would be a cp3 retrofit…… reality is probably another cp4 :(

now here comes the roll the dice- do I trust the dealer enough to swap this out without dorking up more that it started with…..

What do you use for fuel treatment?

Also as someone who just did their own fuel filter,

Is it an easy procedure to change these out?

Hotshot EDT. Changing your filter is good. Priming the system properly afterward is great.

I will not be bringing mine in until i see the "durability" improvements.

My 2022 is working perfect at 15k miles with hot shots every tank 2OZ and as much r95 renewable diesel as I can find. I get 20-24MPG mixed with 38" tires and beadlocks.

This design needs a keeper and a flat spot on the lifters to prevent them from rotating 90 degrees. If they add this then the issues are fixed.

Everything ive seen online has been rotated plungers/lifters on the cam which causes the metal destruction.

Right in the range, now, have it swapped or not have it swapped. Are you guys going to wait for it to be mandatory recall?
I'm going to get as many miles out of this unit that I can.

From looking at different pictures on google. It mounts on the front of the engine, up high. I say it will take all day and maybe 1.5 days at the most. But if you have winch, grill guard, lights. That will slow things up. Because they have to work around it.
