Can you clarify the check valve that was removed? No issues with mine when I had it. Diesel‘s need heat for efficiency and the EPA loves them some efficiency all else be damned.
The first thing I did when I got mine was remove the check valve in the oil cooler allowing the oil to flow through without hitting the 235-240 degree mark.
Hot oil equates to hot cylinders which helps efficiency.
Go buy a spare and experiment.
Is it just my eye, or will this not be compatible with a winch?
Pair that with deletes, and should be on the right step to being golden

Derates from cooling package temps occur at ~235 coolant and ~265 oil from what I have been told by reputable sources. I suspect you had something else wrong or your coolant was meeting that number. Def wouldn't cause this to my knowledge. Did you pull codes? In June/July we did a road trip. Las Vegas, the Canyon, California Liquor shopping.
We derated and shutdown just outside of Tonopah NV, going about 75 mph, 4 people, 2 suitcases and a cooler... Dash lit up with drivetrain ane throttle control errors and vehicle slowed down to approx 30 MPH... we had to pull over and let it cool down. I was not driving, but I was monitoring the Oil temp, 248 when the derate started. Not sure if it when any higher as it was a pretty sketchy situation trying to help the wife navigate off the road safely in the middle of nowhere. Side note... I switched to that Premium Blue Def for the trip since some people mentioned they thought that might help...
Again, as I have said before, these trucks should be able to haul some people and luggage...
It was hot here yesterday, 105... I saw the oil temp at 239 just going 60 on the freeway...
Since I had the shutdown in NV it flagged Jeep and they asked me to bring the truck in for service... I am doubtful they will do anything as they will not be able to "reproduce" the situation.
Just sharing my experience, as mine seems to be an exception... Although it is very similar to may Dads experiences with his JL Diesel. Since we are both in the Pac Northwest, I keep going back to a Tune, or some issue with the vehicle adjusting to elevation and fuel mix ratio.
Based on my experience I can' see how some of you are seeing the temps you are without a derate.
Yeah I wrote them down... but I need to find them... They codes were related to a engine malfunction and electronic throttle control.Derates from cooling package temps occur at ~235 coolant and ~265 oil from what I have been told by reputable sources. I think your throttle control code issues and the overheating derates we're talking about are different scenarios.Yeah I wrote them down... but I need to find them... They codes were related to a engine malfunction and electronic throttle control.
Thanks for the temp numbers you mentioned, I have never seen any of my numbers go that high, and I have experienced 5 derates... Only 3 put me and the family in serious danger on the freeway.
Maybe I should put the foam back on the engine and see if things run cooler![]()
I thought I saw previous references to the "Christmas Tree" of lights on the dash some people have seen when derating, but I can't seem to find it now.I think your throttle control code issues and the overheating derates we're talking about are different scenarios.
In the 46K miles I have driven/towed with my truck, I have never gotten a code, but 100's of derates.
Yes, have a look at the heat shielding along the frame under the passenger's foot. I had a truck in the shop where the harness was touching. Then after I moved it, I got error codes for the transmission shifter? 4 of 5 trucks I've looked at have been OK.I thought I saw previous references to the "Christmas Tree" of lights on the dash some people have seen when derating, but I can't seem to find it now.
Normally when it has derated there is nothing on the dash, but this time the truck actually would not recover, and the dash did look like a Christmas Tree. IDK seems like my results are different than most... I am the LUCKY WINNER!
I still think @NCJL was onto something with the heat shield around the wire loom, but I didn't get to it before our trip, sadly.
