It would be interesting to see your results at different speeds.

Example:

65 mph
45 mph
25 mph
65 is above the posted speed limit towing in CA and the truck is not happy there for long distance anyway.
45 couldn't be maintained if I remember right.
25 would be insanity because even loaded semi truck would run me over?

Test was done on a 9% grade for which the truck wasn't actually rated for at max rated GCVWR. We have a lot of 9%+ grades in our area, but I also do my best to NOT travel when temps are 100°+ anyway.

I've been thinking of doing hood vents, Im trying to figure out if configuring them to exhaust hot air would be more effective than a cold air scoop.

I'm worried a cold air scoop could back-pressure the radiator and ultimately reduce cooling.

My hood vents have done nothing noticeable except look kinda cool at red lights since you can see the hot air getting pushed out from the fan.

I actually like towing through California. I set the cruise at 55 - 56 mph and relax. My best towing fuel economy was going through the Mojave Desert. 👍

If you're on a 9% grade, then I don't think you need to worry about getting run over. Those semi-trucks are struggling on I-40 just to maintain 35 mph on a 6% grade. Sometimes, mountain passes have a lower posted speed limit for commercial trucks. For example, Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado has a posted speed limit of 25 mph for commercial trucks.

9% isn't a problem if it's only a 1/2-mile stretch, but if you have to ride out 9% for 5+ miles, then it's a problem.

My 2015 Ram EcoDiesel has many of the same cooling issues that the Gladiator has. When I'm climbing a long steep mountain pass, I have to slow down to about 20 - 25 mph. It has the power/torque to get up the mountain, but its speed is restricted by oil temperatures. There's usually a passing lane that allows others to get around me, but oftentimes, I'm not the only one struggling.

I first stumbled across 'low-speed operation' by accident. I was winding up a mountain pass with hairpin turns. My speed was restricted for me with a posted speed limit of 25 mph for a good part of the climb. The climb was long, but I noticed the oil temps weren't climbing at a rate they usually would if I were running 40 - 45 mph. That's when I realized that there are cooling gains to be made even at lower speeds.

In many ways, this discovery took a lot of stress off me. I stopped worrying so much when towing in tough conditions. Since then, I added the deep oil pan with cooling fins to give me more cushion.

Same here. I opened up my Rubi vents. Didn't make a difference on the highway. When stopped. You can see the heat waves coming up sometimes.

So just venting didn’t help either eh.
Was wondering that because my scoops don’t seem to be doing anything either

Any idea how much the pan cools?

Sounds like more aggressive options are needed. It would be sweet if someone made a top-mount dual oil cooler with ram-air scoops in the hood. Getting to anything under them for service would be a pain.

The increased capacity and sump space slows the rate in which oil reaches critical temperatures. I would estimate as much as an 8*F reduction at the end of a long steep climb when towing. That may not seem significant, but I haven't seen temps above 249*F. Before the deep pan, I would see 254*F - 257*F.

I believe those are intercoolers - which would be pretty sweet, an intercooler on one side, an oil cooler on the other.
Now we're thinking 🤔 time to file a patent

I owned an 07 WRX quite familiar with what it was. I was just saying make scoops like that or use the S&B scoops to directly feed whatever cooler you want. But one on each side does sound badass.

Have you heard of any for the Gen 3?

Wow that sounds good!
I hit 262 on one trip this year but didn’t derate. That was towing camper 5k lbs w Ac cranking @ 60-70 mph and was warm n humid out.
I got long hills around here so able to coast downhill to get cooled back down some. I kno I could reduce speed n would b fine but sux cuz she’s got plenty power to use.
That amount would be a nice so most likely will go that route next. Thx for the info!

Unfortunately, no. It would be nice if Banks made one. They are currently making deep oil pans for some of the HD trucks.
