The small battery ground cable can be disconnected, which disconnects the small battery.

Right - take it off the top of the IBS on the crank battery neg.
Just be sure to leave the cable from crank battery to body ground alone!



For a 2 week sit, I'd put a battery minder on it.

Thanks for the info! I was told before that it couldn’t so now I need to figure that out. What’s IBS, aside from a bowel condition? Are the cables easy to reach? This is important for me because I frequently have to store my vehicles for months at a time. If I could put them all on a tender that would be great but isn’t always possible. My 2007 is easier because of less electronics and that’s what I’m used to.

When the ESS is working does it actually use the starter to start? I would prefer to just let the thing function as designed but want to know what to do when a battery dies besides call a tow truck. Digging into the the Aux battery when the thing is dead somewhere is a bad idea to me. There should be an easy way to jump it.

That's gonna be hard to do since it will be parked at an airport. Maybe I should just disconnect the battery when I park it then.

It should be okay at the Airport. Store a couple jump start packs that are fully charged in it, and a set of Jumper cables. Mine sat for a week while I went on a trip. It started right up, and it still has the original batteries in it that are three years old (in a hot climate).

I've been sick and have gone nowhere for over a week - last place I went I took my car. The truck has been sitting in the garage, not started, for I think about 10 days now. I can't recall going any place before the car show a week ago where I would have used the truck. So figure at least 10 days sitting.
I went out and checked the voltage - 12.19 by the Fluke.
Battery charger says 31% with both batteries still fully connected, and charger connected in such a way it was "seeing" both batteries.
I disconnected the AUX battery at the crank battery negative post, isolating the two batteries from each other.
The main battery then read 12.6 by Fluke, the AUX measured 12.9 volts by the Fluke.
The charger connected only to the aux battery said 40% state of charge.

I didn't try, but I'm confident it would have started.
And Mr_Bill can correct me if wrong, but the 12.19 reading was based on voltage while things were still totally connected and the slight draw from the system.
With them isolated from each other and the system unable to pull voltage down, that's my explanation for the voltage reading higher once I pulled the aux negative cable from the IBS.


When I first went out and measured - 12.19 volts and 31% charge based on both batteries still connected in parallel and to the truck electronics->

They want to track every milliamp going in or coming out.

Both of mine had to be replaced under warranty, after taking it to the dealership to check on a constant notification that a battery was charging. My 2020 Gladiator had less than 5,000 miles on it. The dealership tech told me that the ESS was the culprit, so I have disabled mine. There are other threads on this issue.

Can someone enlighten me on this? Not very mechanically inclined, but man, do I feel like I’m getting shafted by the dealership.
Jeep won’t start, 2020 Glad, no mods, and it has 38k miles on it. (2kMike out of warranty?)
Attempt to jump start but the dash reads that the car is in 2H so it won’t start. But in fact it is not in gear, it’s been parked. I can’t get it “out of gear” so I can’t jump it. Have to get towed to the dealership. Whil waiting for the tow, I hear a very faint high pitched noise from under the hood? Very faint. It won’t quit when I disconnect the mail battery. It does quit when I pull a “larger” rectangular fuse. Put the fuse back and it continues to sound. Get towed and the dealer says they have to start with both batteries because they both aren’t passing the test and they are both failing. Both at the same time??? Then he tells me it $898 to replace both!?!!! On a two yr old vehicle!?!? $900 on batteries. And they won’t work with me on the 2k over the warranty. I have no choice. They put the batteries in and says the car tests fine. No issues??? I don’t believe it? Two batteries dead at once? In my mind there’s something else wrong with this car.
And, who makes those batteries? Is it Jeep? What’s the warranty on a battery? Even the cheapest batteries from Walmart have a warranty better than that. Can I go to Jeep customer service? Corporate? The battery manufacturer? I feel likeI got taken big time!
Any advice out there?? $900 is a tough pill to swallow. Thank you!

I hope I’m not repeating what someone else has said but I went through this exact same thing, fortunately mine was covered under warranty. You’ll need to have your dealer check for a wire that has rubbed through the insulation and I’d grounding out. I went through 3 batteries and 4 trips to type dealer before they finally listened and looked for a grounded out wire. Once I got it back I installed a Bluetooth battery monitor on both batteries to make sure I don’t get stranded again.
