Check this thread. A member used the Insane Diesel secondary oil filter kit for ecodiesels (Ram & Gladiator) which I believe taps off the port in the oil pump, and then plumbed in a secondary oil cooler in the return line, which then dumps the cooled oil back in the oil fill cap. Lowered his engine oil temps ~12 degrees.

The problem with the Extreme Diesel kit is some come with the oil port pulling oil off the filter housing. Then they want you to buy the 2nd Generation oil filter to use. There is a TSB telling the dealers not to use the old style oil filter on the 3rd Gen EcoDiesel. The oil bypass is in the filter housing. So I purchased the Extreme Diesel Kit, but have not installed it. I want another guinea pig testing it first. You could tee off of the oil pressure sending unit, but I am also not sure how much oil pressure reduction would be in that galley. Right now it is not worth the unproven risk for me.

Im looking at a oil plug pump to radiator to small filter to oil cap return. Piecing the who thing together is more work than it seems.

Any one get this supply/return to an oil cooler figured out? Crusing at 75-80 on the interstate last week i saw in the 220-224 range at approx 70 deg ambient and no tow load. Ridiculous, should be able to get it in the 200 range.

Oil temp? 220-230 is perfect under that kind of a load. Boils the moisture out.

You think so? I worry that it will go to 240+ towing. What is the upper temp limit of the Euro 5w40? If the oil temp is putting these diesels in limp mode around 280 there has to be something better

260s will break down the oil. You're safe at 240.

If you look to my post earlier in the thrad, that's what I did. I'm running the filter cap, earlier filter and added an inline oil cooler. Working great.
Also, the 2nd and 3rd gen filter material is the same. They made is simpler to install for lube techs @ dealers with the 3rd gen due to the 1 piece design. There's no TSB that I can find.

Even synthetic? Not trying to be a keyboard warrior but thought that good full syn was safe to 300+.

I've always heard its safe to 450 degrees, but Mopar posted the following:

"High oil temperature in excess of 240°F (115°C) will break down petroleum oils and cause oxidation, which in turn forms deposits, varnish and increases wear."

Lots of info in the Ram forums around 260+ starting to show issues under oil analysis using 5w-40.
We also see oil temperatures at 260 trigger derates. So, I'm guessing there's some science behind it which is why the engineers designed it that way.

Those temps are akin to the dentist office: you occasionally have to visit, but don't want to remain any longer than necessary. And keep in mind, the oil life monitor take those spikes/load events into consideration, although follow the manual recommendations regardless for PM service.

Interesting info to keep in mind then, I wonder if it has to do with complexity and the specific grade or how the diesel uses its oil.(routing, passages, valve control etc).

Lubrication, cooling, hydraulics, and material preservation - in addition to - aftertreament system being able to reconcile scavenged crankcase oil without being "poisoned". The prior four are interdependent, with one reliant on the other three "holding together". These are generalities, but what, in the technician world, is understood as being important to long engine life.
