I am in the Denver area and got a quote at the start of the year for 5.13 and a front locker from Rock Solid 4x4. I found them through reviews and Facebook stalking and asked for the quote after chatting with them when I went in for an alignment. There total then was right around $4500 with Yukon gears, eaton e-locker, oil and tazer for calibration... I will likely have them do it mid summer but will bring my own spicer gears ... as to the lighter tires and wheels suggestion, it is a good one ... if I was just driving around town, I would probably just leave it alone (37 bfg and method wheels) ... feel free to reach out if you want to see if that is enough of a difference

I know of a shop here in Socal and all they do is regearing all day long. They charged me $1250 to do my Rubicon with 5.13s as part of a new years special. Other than that everyone else locally wanted $3k and above. Same shop also did my Tacoma and I have nothing but great things to say about them. They use revolution gears which is located out of the same part of California near Corona.
Total? With parts? I don't even know how they got a profit off that if true. I used (@ wholesale pricing) Dana Spicer gears, master install kits front and rear, with oil, and I was sitting at/around $900. In my my own shop with my own lift.

They cut costs somewhere to get that price... But hell, well done if that worked out!

Just wanted to add something. We have heard of a couple people that have done gear changes with the factory diff covers and had overheating problems resulting in damage and re gearing a second time. They then were informed it was recommended to increase fluid capacity with aftermarket covers that have cooling fins as well. It may be a good idea to add that into the cost as well. Others with personal experience may also have some input on this.

I recently had mine regeared from the Sport 3.73 gears to 5.13s and added front and rear e-lockers.
Gears, lockers, and labor (including 500 mile service) was $5697. Lockers were $3k, gears were about $1K, so about $2K in labor.

That doesn't sound right. Been regearing for YEARS and never HAD to change a diff cover.

Let me throw this out there for the OP. The cost of tires these days are extreme to replace 35s or 37s. That being said I’ve run 35s on factory 4.10s then went to 37s on the 4.10s. I didn’t want to pay what I paid for the gears but now I’m like everyone else that finally did it and say ā€œ wish I did it soonerā€ . So going down to 35s really isn’t worth downsizing in my opinion. I won’t say what I paid but I live in Northern California so you know prices are high here regardless but I’d pay it again.

That’s high

I paid $1200 for the gears and covers on Northridge and $1500 for install. If I went to a different shop and let them get the parts I probably could have got cheaper

now, I have another small shop that I go to and he quotes $500/axle and bring your own parts

20-25 years ago you could get regeared for $1k to $1,250.

You just need a time machine instead of your own shop and lift.

Thanks for the input guys. I talked to a very knowledgeable shop who does Jeep builds and they quoted me under 3k. This included all gearing, fluids, 500mi inspection, labor. They were a pleasure to talk with and have years of Jeep and fabrication experience.

That's real bad info, if the gears are heating up that hot, then they have a bad install.

Many aftermarket diff covers add very little extra fluid capacity if at all.

The main reason to get aftermarket diff covers for an off-road vehicle is to protect those expensive gears from impact damage and/or to look cool on the street.

I know this topic has been addressed and best to death, but I’m hoping for some feedback.

I recently did something I thought I’d never do; I traded my built 5th gen 4Runner for a 2020 Mojave. The Mojave is in incredible condition, I scrutinized and looked over it in detail prior to purchasing.

Its setup on Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT’s (37x12.5x17) on Fuel wheels running what looks like a -18 offset. The truck drives amazing and I’m pretty happy about the switch.

All that being said I’m looking at a Regear (5:13) for here in the Rocky Mountains. I’ve gotten two quotes from very reputable Jeep shops in the area. Both were between 4-5K. This seemed incredibly high based on my research and I’m debating just moving to a 35 on the OE 4.10 gearing.

Thoughts?

We get them done at 4wheel parts in Loveland around $2,000 maybe a little less they've done a bunch for us no problems and great warranty. Good guy's to deal with

No larger diff cover?

It's really about the look.

This should be highlighted and stickied. So many people get into Gladiators and think "I'll just run 37s and a cheap lift on my stock gears". It is such a bad idea to skip re-gearing.

Most shops in my area (Seattle suburbs) are in the $3300-$3600 range, which I thought was on the high side so anything over $4k is absurd.

On a side note, @307Mojave how many miles do you have on those Baja Boss MTs? It is the most wear I have seen so far so I am curious how many miles people are getting out of them (I have the exact same tires).

Cheers
