Yes I agree but eventually all oil will get filtered, and adding a inline cooler to this will help. Unfortunately this is all we have currently and I haven't seen any other ideas yet unless you have a better idea where to tap for oil cooling?

I am still not sure about the horns, do you have a picture?
Not a great picture but it will give you an idea.
The horns cover a little over a third of the trans cooler and then the portion of the radiator behind it.

Wow, the actual horns , my bad. I thought it was the metal support bar with the red circles.

I believe, the bypass filter/ports to it is what controls the amount of oil flow. I suspect the ports into the bypass filter housing are smaller reducing the flow amount forcing the bulk of the oil to stay it's designed course.

Basically if you tapped into the oil pressure switch you would get as much flow as the oil pressure switch port size allows, which is likely more then 10%. The challenge lies in balancing flow enough to not starve other parts of the oil circulation system.

From what I could gather in other forums the fan comes on at 230*. If I could hit a grade at 200* vs the roughly 220* that it normally runs then I may get up the grade without the derate. Hopefully.
I’m looking forward to seeing what next week brings. Between gears, functional hood vents, horn relocation, and manual control of the cooling fan I should see some improvement. If not……… well I will be very disappointed to say the least. Lol
Very interested in your findings. Off to update my tazer.

I’ve been pulling my 3,800 lb camper for the past three weeks. Started in Florida to Moab, Ouray and now Branson, Missouri. I only experienced derating today and that was when I stopped for a quick fuel stop for about ten minutes. Ambient temo was 96 degrees. I left and got onto the interstate and the reduced power wouldn’t let me exceed 55 mph. My coolant temp was 218, Oil 232 and trans 208 degrees. Well within safe specs.

I pulled over and cycled the ignition. Still remained. I then shut down at a rest area for 15 minutes. Still derated. I was getting concerned and pressed on. After about ten more minutes it cleared up and full power returned. At no time were my temps higher than what I posted. My guess is that when I made the fuel stop the intercooler and intake got heat soaked.

I dont shut mine off for fuel stops especially when its hot. I figure its a great time to cool things off and the cab stays cool.

I agree and started doing that after this happened.

Good looking truck. What lift and tires are you running?

I pulled a pretty heavy trailer probably 5k all weight included (heavy for the gladiator) this year and I got pretty hot on the long hill climbs I think oil was 270 and water was 245 at one point and it de powered or de fueled… but I live on a 6 mile very very steep gravel road in the mountains. In fact I put it in 4 low to be able to pull it. On my way home every major hill I was getting hot but when I was in 4 low it didn’t get hot at all. I was wondering has anyone re geared and towed a heavy trailer yet to report if that helped at all????

Just went with 4:56’s, I’ll have some news next week on how it pulls.

It is crazy that even with the full grill removed, there is not enough cooling to be had with the stock heat exchangers. I wonder if it is a hot air evacuation problem, maybe the exchangers are not sized properly, or as one poster mentioned, in order to better complete combustion higher general temperatures are maintained? Regardless of the “why”, it seems rather obvious these Jeep’s are not actually meeting their advertised specifications. This should be an issue for Jeep to correct, and not let it’s customers struggle to come up with fix’s that are sub par.

Imagine being told that you can only use 4L on cold days? How would that go with the dealer?

Bulletproof Diesel Response:

Hello C,

Thank you for taking the time to write in.

We appreciate the information and will be actively looking for a Jeep to look at and see what can be done. We will keep you informed if there is anything we can do to help with this.

Again thank you for the feedback and the information.

I just got off the phone with BulletProof Diesel and if there are any people in the Mesa, AZ or SouthWest region that have the means to allow them to take a look at their vehicle this is something they are very interested in helping us find a solution for.

I'm all about looking for companies that have the proper tools, network, and ability to find long lasting and overkilled solutions to issues that we have with our diesel vehicles. Could there be a cheap way to cool the oil system and tap into the existing housing? Maybe, but with a $60k+ investment I'd rather try and find a solution that goes through some serious engineering, research, and development. I've blown an oil line on a rig before on the freeway and it is no fun. And there is no shortage of people having issues of leaks or other issues with cheaper competitors products. I've hauled hundreds of thousands of miles however personally with BulletProofs products in the most extreme conditions and never had an issue from one of their products.

So if there is a couple of people closer than me that can loan them their Gladiator and/or Wrangler for a couple days hopefully they can come up with something to help us get these temps under control and enjoy our EcoDiesels without worrying about damage to the motors, being stranded somewhere, and assure the longevity of our investment.
