Diesel cooling options and ideas

There are plenty of aluminum radiator upgrades available so this isn't ground breaking? The problem I have seen WAY too much is reports of all of the "Upgraded" aluminum radiator cracking in a short time.

CSF's radiator has a pretty hefty price tag, but worth it if it works and holds up?

Cold Case even has a newer "Extruded core" offering that sounds appetizing, but again....How long will it hold up?

On the Z forum. CSF and Mishashittymoto radiators last about 2 yrs or so before they start to leak. This is with high HP cars.

So, there we have it........the reports of under a year lifespan in a Jeep are believable.

Did anyone get the plans from primer gray for the auxiliary cooler under the bumper or has somebody started making them? I reached out to him directly but haven’t heard anything back yet. I’m definitely looking into doing this to my jeep and I have a few others interested as well.

I can produce another batch, but I will need at least seven firm commitments.

I did a 5.7 Hemi swap on my son’s jeep, and he went through 4 or 5 summit racing aluminum radiators in a couple of years that cracked and leaked. The first one was expensive and the rest were warranty replacements. He finally got fed up with cooling issues and sold the Jeep.

for this reason, when I built my 1947 cj2a truck conversion with V6, sm420, etc, I found a brass a copper radiator for a 1964 Mustang that fit the location. When a seam developed a leak late last year, I just resoldered the seam (I’ve fixed lots of radiators like this in the past 40 years). Took longer to remove the radiator than to fix the leak.

not a fan of aftermarket aluminum radiators…

Just completed a trip from CA to PA and back.

Truck had about 1500LB of payload and was towing a 6,200LB airstream with about 750LB of tongue weight.

Drove the majority of the way at around 75.

The climb from Needles to Flagstaff was limited to about 55mph on the steepest grades and my engine coolant reached a max of 242 degrees — but I never experienced a hard derate event in the entire 6,400 mile round trip..

Temps would climb on grades and quickly recover as soon as the crest was reached.

My youngest son bought a Gladiator diesel the last year produced, which surprised me give the known cooling issues. My oldest son wanted the diesel Gladiator but couldn’t get past the cooling issues, so went with gas.

Was covered a page back. Spendy bugger, especially when aftermarket alum rads never seem to last.

180 degree thermostat really helps. I was towing through the hills of Kentucky and southern Indiana this weekend and only watched oil temps spike. Cooling temps stayed near 220 and never moved. Oil temp would hit 250 on top of the hills.

We found this to be true on the 2014 - 2019 Ram and Jeep EcoDiesel. Here's what GDE said:

"This thermostat is an OE Genuine Behr product, it starts opening at 88°C (190°F) and is fully open at 98°C (208°F). This will drop warm operating temps for coolant and engine oil about 10°C (18°F). This is also beneficial for towing long grades as full cooling is reached at lower temps, so it takes longer to reach overheat protection in extreme environments (i.e. 100°F towing large loads up a 6% grade) like Davis Dam in Arizona.

This product is only emissions compliant when used together with the GDE emission compliant tuning. It will only be sold to customers with Gen2 EcoDiesels (2014-2018 Grand Cherokee, 2014-2019 Ram 1500) already running this calibration set. Included is the new thermostat+housing assembly and the o-ring."
