Could you disconnect the door sensor when you have to do this kind of maneuvering? Then it'd think the doors are off. I don't know for sure, as my manual doesn't auto park. But our manual compass did, because it had the electronic parking brake. This all started when the Grand cherokees were recalled due to a dangerous faulty shift lever.
That seems like a lot of hassle, and then you are risking bent pins in the connector that creates other issues. All you have to do is buckle the seat belt and keep weight on the seat. You don't have to have the belt around you, just buckled.

My experience not knowing or hearing about this "feature" was backing a boat down the ramp, got out to help offload and started to pull fwd or try to with the door open.
Nothing happened and I got the Park Mode engaged message on dash. Following instructions did nothing because I never put seat belt on. I thought something was broken.
Finally tried 4Lo and it disabled the Park Mode and I pulled up the ramp.
I assume that if you're going in and out on trail in 4Lo you won't need to worry about it but that seems like the time it should have been engaged. Would have saved the child last week.

Simplest fix I have heard. I have not looked at it specifically but I dont remember their being a door button like many cars. I wonder if it is located in the lock mechanism. If that is the case I would go ahead and add a switch to that wire. At this point I just need to know what color the wires are.

Yes you can do that. There are threads about this issue with other solutions too.

YouTube is your buddy.

I will mention that just yesterday I saw a thread on this forum or maybe the JL side where a child was killed on the Rubicon trail because the father stopped the Jeep and jumped out to help another Jeep, and the kids started climbing out and hit the shifter and the Jeep rolled over top of another child, killing him. In that scenario, AutoPark would have saved the child's life.

I do find it a pia sometimes...there should be a way to disable it. Like the auto start start. It's not annoying all the time but when it is ...

FROM OWNERS MANUAL PAGE 147-148
AUTOPARK
"AutoPark is a supplemental feature to assist in
placing the vehicle in PARK should the
situations on the following pages occur. It is a
back up system and should not be relied upon
as the primary method by which the driver shifts
the vehicle into PARK.
The conditions under which AutoPark will
engage are outlined on the following pages.
WARNING!
 Driver inattention could lead to failure to
place the vehicle in PARK. ALWAYS DO A
VISUAL CHECK that your vehicle is in PARK
by verifying that a solid (not blinking) “P” is
indicated in the instrument cluster display
and on the gear selector. If the "P" indicator
is blinking, your vehicle is not in PARK. As
an added precaution, always apply the
parking brake when exiting the vehicle.
 AutoPark is a supplemental feature. It is not
designed to replace the need to shift your
vehicle into PARK. It is a back up system
and should not be relied upon as the
primary method by which the driver shifts
the vehicle into PARK.

If the vehicle is not in PARK and the driver exits
the vehicle with the engine running, the vehicle
may AutoPark.
AutoPark will engage when all of these
conditions are met:
 Vehicle is equipped with an 8-speed transmission
 Driver door is ajar or if the driver door is
removed and the driver is not on the seat
(seat pad sensor detects driver missing)
 Vehicle is not in PARK
 Driver door is removed
 Vehicle speed is 1.2 mph (1.9 km/h) or less
 Driver seat belt is unbuckled
 Driver door is ajar
 Brake pedal is not pressed
The message “AutoPark Engaged Shift to P then
Shift to Gear” will display in the instrument
cluster."

It appears that the most reliable way to avoid AutoPark is to keep your seat belt buckled. You should still be able to open the door slightly for reversing into tight spots, just a bit more effort to leave the seat belt on.

What is the problem with a safety feature design to stop deaths? Is there a legitimate needs or are we just bring difficult because Big Gob'mint Daddy said you have to do it?
Because you’ll never fix stupid. If you’re not a complete idiot then the “feature” is way more of an “annoyance” than a “feature”

I dunno, feels like you are reaching to make excuses. The wifes last two cars have had it and as long as you play by the rules it's basically transparent in operation.

The stupid here seems to be the operators.

The simplest fix are these. Clip them in and viola, it's disengaged.

Since this is my daily driver, I don't want it permanently disabled. I want to choose when. These work perfectly.

Seatbelt does the same thing. Just leave it attached behind ones body.

Habits. History of bad habits.

How many people here open the door and turn around to look when backing up? That used to be a thing.

If I'm in my driveway and need to move the truck 5' forward in the driveway, I can't just hop in it and move it.

Our Audi Q3 did the same thing. It's happened enough times for me to notice, and be mildly annoyed.

Back when doors weighed 300# (I'm looking at you, 1978 Monte Carlo), opening and closing doors was a workout.
