diesels run hotter for more efficiency, ie better fuel burn, so it's a balancing act to get good performance and not smoke things....

According to one youtuber he claims air filter flow can have an impact on temps as well. Basically the already small OEM filter that is dirty will quickly drive up EGR temps compared to a fresh filter.

Take it for what it is, as I have now found myself quoting the expertise's of a youtube professor...... which scares me.

at least a filter change is easy and you can test it yourself for a few bucks.
I have an open filter made no difference at all.

Only thing that’s helped temps is a huge poison spider hood vent and removing all the insulation under the hood and the cowl seal.

Nothing else helped the uphill high oil temps of 245+

Been a while since I have been on the board... Been focused on rebuilding my CJ. I was hoping to find that some of you super smart gearheads figured out a solution ;). I caught a post from another user on the forum saying that there is NO WAY a modern vehicle would overheat.... LOLOL I guess technically my jeep doesn't overheat, it just says "nope, we aint going no more, Hope you don't die cuz your trying to merge with traffic that is going 80mph"

Anybody thought about a coolant additive, or replacement like that 40 Below stuff Summit sells? Wonder if this would affect my warranty.

When I hear about all the guys in hot climates claiming to drive 70-80 up steep grades I really question what the deal is. Like I have said many times... Mine will derate going up Mount Hood, with my family and some suitcases and a cooler in the bed.

Any idea if Jeep changed coolants year over year? Maybe I got a bad batch???

My dads Grand Cherokee Eco has never derated, even pulling a 26' trailer through the hills. (Different airflow design, I know... just sayin)

Not even sure how to approach this with the dealer.....

I'm sure the "Einsteins" will be back in the heat threads within a couple of weeks as weather heats back up suggesting hood vents, fender liners, removing cowl foam, removing the hood, etc........

I'm a huge fan of Amsoil and Redline coolant boosters, but could never recommend due to what the warranty Nazis would say? They are not a miracle cure, but I do know it fixed the condition on my mother's car where she had to shut the AC off on the same hill everyday on her way home from work until I put Redline in it. Maybe that 2-4° is all she needed.

EDIT: My truck is at the dealer today getting the Y81, rear window leak, and tcase leak checked out....I didn't even mention the heat issue since it's not like they are going to duplicate the problem and fix it.

I’ve been able to reduce my normal highway driving temperatures by 15/20 degrees. I have a 4K trailer that I have only towed since making modifications. I can keep temps below 240* with oil cooler fan turned on. Fan is only needed going up long grades when towing
I posted everything I did in another thread with more details.
I was derating on long drives with oil temps above 230*. Wire harnesses got to hot.
Redline water wetter did help as mentioned above.
The biggest thing I did was add a bypass oil filter tapped into the bottom of the oil filter housing with oil cooler/fan. Return oil tapped into oil pan.

I've had no cooling issues and don't tow. I know a ton of people are having issues though. I'm assuming one component will not be a fix but maybe a certain combo will see decent results.

- Has any tried running high end aftermarket radiator fans? Also, if you have a bumper/winch that blocks your grille this is going to kill airflow.
- cold air intake for more air. The stock one is tiny.
- a properly vented hood to let hot air escape

so far I have no issue! I installed the bumper and the lights for two months. But most of my drive are done on the highway.

Our radiator fan exceeds most aftermarket,

Our issues are with oil temprature not coolant.

I have a KN intake and even with 50degree starting IAT it gets up to 90ish on a steep grade at speed. Oil temp starts at 220 and can run up just past 250 easy.

I have done a hood vent removed all the foam and engine covers and that has helped a ton off-road and at lower speeds. Helps tremendously with heat soaking.

Nothings helped the oil temp while climbing grades.

This is good info. I’ve been considering getting a vented hood. Which one are you using?

Have you seen anyone that’s tried to add an aftermarket oil cooler?

Read the thread. It's amazing yours hasn't over heated with all that crap up front.

Best intake is the stock intake. Everything else is waste of money.

I'm curious to see if any diesel is now rocking that 25 anniversary grille and if that actually made a difference.

lol what crap up front? My bumper and winch don’t block my grille. Also, I don’t tow. I drive a lot of steep grades and don’t see oil temps over mid 220s. They could be lower but that’s not overheating.

A few people have. I plan to add a full flow cooler with fans and external filter with a bypass plate to get rid of the factory oil cooler. Waiting for the warranty to fall off.

I’m running the poison spyder hood vent. Works very well. You can see the heat coming out of it at a stop. Also removing all insulation under the hood and the cowl seal and side foam blocks. Everything helps!

That sounds like it will be a fantastic setup.

Thank you for sharing. This is the one I was looking at getting but I wasn’t sure if it was worth cutting a hole in my hood lol.

Keep in mind those two months are some of the cooler one in the year still… but then again, I’ve still not actually derated ever.

I’m kind of in the same place, I did tow my boat last summer a few times and saw oil temps hit 260ish when it was about 95 degrees out. However, dropping from 75mph to 55mph would bring those temps down into the 240’s.

Now, unloaded, I’ve only seen my oil temp hit 240 on some of the nastiest climbs we have around here in about 112 degree temperatures.

I figure being on 37’s, lifted and a stubby bumper don’t help my rig.

I was thinking about this thread and wondering if Jeep came out with a real fix, or an aftermarket company did, in my mind this would be up there with best vehicles ever made in terms making a brick fuel efficient with an amazing of power and torque, off road capability. At this point the oil temps are maybe the only thing that creeps into my head as to regrets with the ecodiesel and after about 18 months it’s more something to be mindful of than a bogeyman hiding under the bed.
