These were the gauges I was monitoring on the Banks unit:

EGT bank 1 sensor —
(Exhaust Gas Temperature)

FRP sensor —
(Fuel Rail Pressure)

ECT —
(Engine Coolant Temperature)

EOT —
(Engine Oil Temperature)

BOOST —
(Turbo Boost PSI)

Just a follow up with our direct experience two weeks ago…

We pulled our fully loaded 6300lb travel trailer, about 900lb of cargo in the bed, and 4 passengers in the cab over the I70 eastbound Eisenhower pass in Colorado (aka IKE gauntlet, just under 12,000 feet elevation).

The whole experience was velvety smooth.. there were a few grades that had the truck maxed out at 45mph, but those were short..

Average speed was comfortably in the 50’s for the majority of the climb from Denver to the summit.

Coolant maxed out at 243, oil maxed out at 276.. so it definitely got really hot but we did not experience an extreme derate or any mil lights which exceeded my expectations before hitting the grades.

Super happy with results from upgrading to the 24’ grill/Mishimoto radiator/BPD auxiliary cooling unit/Yukon 4.56 gears w/35” Wildpeak tires/4.5” Metalcloak lift w/evo 4.5” HD springs and inner spring airbags in the rear.

I am swapping out the BPB aux cooler for a slightly larger unit to see if it is possible to get even better control over the temps when towing…

I monitored EGT via a Banks Supergauge during the trip, and the computer seemed to be more concerned with the exhaust temp passing 1.5k degrees than the oil or coolant temps.. I could watch the fuel rail pressure reduce as soon as 1.5-1.6k EGT were reached..

Interesting how different everyone is experiencing this issue..

Thanks for the info! Was the pull and the numbers done with the 24' Grill and Mishimoto radiator?

How was the trans temp? Mishi makes a trans cooler as well.

It's really hard to know, but I would guess a good 8*F reduction on the longer grades. The extra capacity gives the oil more time to rest and cool before it's cycled back through the engine. Essentially, the oil takes longer for the temps to reach overheat protection.

The 2014 - 2019 EcoDiesel has cooling issues due to the radiator/intercooler stacked design. As long as I slow down, then I can avoid derate on any of the long steep mountain passes in the Mountain West.

The oil also takes longer to reach operating temperature. Some impact on efficiency unfortunately. I want to do the radiator and trans cooler because those are thermostat controlled.

Just drove this heavily loaded 16ft enclosed 1700 miles averaging 70/75mph getting roughly 12/13mpg and didn’t even get close to derating(oil temp maybe hit 250 once or twice). No cruise control and had to manually select the gear time to time but no problems.

What are the numbers that I should be watching for when monitoring those? I believe this is what I have seen and just want to confirm I have the correct numbers:

EGT bank 1 sensor — 1200-1300 Optimal 1500-Dangerous
(Exhaust Gas Temperature)

FRP sensor — No Idea
(Fuel Rail Pressure)

ECT — 210-220
(Engine Coolant Temperature)

EOT — 200-230range 270 Derating
(Engine Oil Temperature)

BOOST — No Idea
(Turbo Boost PSI)

Derate isn't an issue unless you're towing heavier loads in hilly or mountainous terrain, especially in warmer ambient temperatures.

Cooling isn't bad when you are in sane temps. Out here in the southwest where things are always 90+ most of the year, your oil temps spike pretty easy.

Just did a 6000 mile trip through the south to NY, and the JT did great and oil temp never got crazy, but I attribute that to more humidity and temps less then 80 degrees most of the time.

Saw this and knew you all would get something from this.

I haven’t looked if BANKS has our pans but worth looking at anyway.
I forget where I heard that they have no plans to make one for Eco diesel, unfortunately.

I think this diesel community needs to make some noise and call the company’s #. Their phone should be lit up constantly until they make it.

Ambient temps are a big factor… the same trailer empty I can’t tow at highway speeds in the summer here I just hauled 140 miles round trip with a decent load with no issues. The ambient temps in the summer? 110+ Yesterday? 60.

FYI for what its worth 40 years + with turbo diesels..I'd limit 1100* max steady if measures in the exhaust manifold. short burst like passing to 1400*+-.

The smaller light duty diesel engines (3.0L Powerstroke, 3.0L Duramax, and 3.0L EcoDiesel) are oftentimes overlooked and not considered highly profitable like the heavy duty engines (Powerstroke, Duramax, and Cummins). Maybe Banks will reevaluate once they're caught up with the HD platforms.

To be honest, though. I have the AFE oil pan on my 2015 EcoDiesel and I rarely hear of anyone running one. When I suggest it to people, they shrug it off because they don't want to spend the money. Your HD truck owners know and understand their investments, so they are willing to put money into aftermarket pans and covers.

Well, I contacted Banks today and pointed them to this thread. They said they would look into it…that’s not a “no” so I suggest all of you reach out to them as well with and tell them you’re interested with your inputs. They just need to know there’s a market for them. They have to have a relatively small percentage of HD (because there are so many) but they need a relatively higher percentage of our JTD’s to make it profitable.
